Mixed feelings about Thomas Ruff.
If there's one photographer who leads me to question the terrible term 'Fine Art Photography' it is he. And when it comes to institutional enforcement of what and who is great, the V & A were hard it at by choosing him as their inaugural photographer to open proceedings on the newly opened & long-awaited Photography Centre. Landing the plump job to rework V&A's new archive of Captain Linnaeus Tripe (1822 - 1902) Ruff did well. Answering the bold question from the audience "What's with the Porn?", he didn't fare so good. If photography is, as I believe at its best, a catalyst for conversation, Ruff stumbled at the first jump. "Telling", said aforementioned member of the audience. Indeed.
