Children with Sickle Cell Disease in the waiting room of Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. The clinical services for patients with SCD require a multidisciplinary approach and are shared between three departments; Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Internal Medicine and Paediatrics and Child Health. There is no newborn screening for SCD and most of the patients are diagnosed when they present with symptoms and signs suggestive of illness. There are two outpatient clinics a week providing outpatient services to SCD patients. The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health provides services to children under 13 years of age who are seen in a clinic that is specifically dedicated to SCD.
